Ruchika Bhardwaj, Prakash Saudagar, Vikash Kumar Dubey

Abstract

Leishmaniasis, malaria, ancylostomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and Trypanosomiasis are among the most prevalent and perilous diseases of the third world. They are widespread in tropical regions affecting millions of people worldwide each year. As most of the lives affected by them are below the poverty line, capital-driven pharmaceutical companies are not too keen towards developing low-cost drugs, affordable by the low income population but still requiring high investment to develop. This is an "orphan drug" situation that has brought about an urgent need to investigate into an alternative technology to not only create a drug with low cost of production but also with high efficacy. In this article, we discuss the various new and economical technologies and drug screening methods for effective combating of parasitic diseases, with nanobiosciences as the main area of focus.

Keywords: Nanobiosciences; Antiparasitic drugs; Drug screening; Orphan diseases; Tropical diseases; Cost-effective therapeutics.
